Celtic legend Pat Bonner has told BBC Sportsound he’s surprised that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard didn’t play Scott Arfield in midfield.

Gerrard’s side lost 2-0 to the Hoops in this afternoon’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox.

The Rangers manager deployed Arfield in a slightly different role to the one which saw him get the better of Celtic captain Scott Brown on a couple of occasions in midfield last season.

And Bonner is ‘shocked’ that Gerrard didn’t line up that way again.

“If you look back to the games at Ibrox last year, Arfield played in top of Scott Brown,” he told BBC Sportsound.

“He won those battles. He was on the front foot every single time and I’m shocked they didn’t go with that again.”

Hindsight is a great thing, but Bonner probably has a point.

Arfield looked a shadow of the Rangers player who tormented the Celtic skipper last season – and celebrated in his face at full-time – and you wonder whether Gerrard would change it if he could turn the clock back.

Goals in both halves from Odsonne Edouard and Jonny Hayes were enough for Neil Lennon’s side.
