Former Celtic player Andy Walker believes the gulf in both finances and quality between Celtic and Rangers right now means a title challenge for Mark Warburton’s men is unrealistic, Sky Sports report.

The Gers won the Scottish Championship last season and after knocking Celtic out of the Scottish Cup at the semi-final stage, many felt Warburton’s side could challenge the Hoops for the title this term.

However, Rangers have made an inconsistent start to the season while Celtic go in to the Old Firm derby sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership and boasting a 100% record in the league.

Brendan Rodgers’ men have bolstered their squad in the summer with the likes of Kolo Toure and Scott Sinclair joining, and Walker feels Celtic’s financial advantage gives them the edge over their rivals.

“The problem for Rangers is they have come up as title winners from the Championship and are expected to compete with Celtic immediately. I think that is unrealistic,” Walker told Sky Sports.

“Celtic have had a number of years to be financially in a better place in terms of their recruitment of experienced players, of Champions League players, and I think that gives them the edge.”

Celtic’s qualification to the Champions League group stages will no doubt give them further financial clout to work with, while Rangers on the other hand must be wary of again spending beyond their means.

The Gers made a number of signings during the summer with the likes of Joey Barton, Niko Kranjcar and Clint Hill adding experience, yet their best bet is to buy younger players with plenty of potential.

Bridging the gap with Celtic could take time, and Rangers supporters need to show some patience even if it means falling some way behind their rivals this early on in the season.
