Ex-Villa star Darius Vassell explained why he is happy that his former club did not sign Gunners ace Jack Wilshere this summer, during an exclusive interview with the Express.

The 25-year-old Arsenal man was linked with a switch to Villa Park during the summer transfer window, with Steve Bruce admitting that he wanted to bring the England international to the club, according to the Sun.

And Vassell delivered his verdict on Wilshere, when speaking exclusively to the Express:

Jack Wilshere of England celebrates scoring their second goal during the UEFA EURO 2016 Qualifier between Slovenia and England on at the Stozice Arena on June 14, 2015 in Ljubljana,...

“Wilshere when he burst onto the scene, I thought ‘wow what a player he’s gonna be for England perhaps captain England’. The fact he’s seen that other players have surpassed him and he has been involved in England set-up, it has been a shame. Should he move on and do other bits and pieces? As a fan, no I want to see him do his bits and pieces at the club he belongs.”

The west Midlands outfit have made a respectable start to their 2017/18 Championship campaign, with four wins and four draws from their opening 10 league outings, although it would be hard to argue that Wilshere would not have improved their starting line-up.

Bruce’s men have lacked a certain level of creativity in midfield so far this season, and the Arsenal man would undoubtedly have offered the Villans an entirely different edge to their play in the final third.

Wilshere is being eased back to fitness by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, after a fairly successful loan spell with Bournemouth last term, but if he fails to make his way into the Gunners first-team, Bruce might very well be tempted to make another move for the 34-capped England international in January.
