Paul Lambert refused to be drawn on whether he would be applying for the Borussia Dortmund job.
Former Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has refused to rule out the possibility of becoming the next Borussia Dortmund manager during an interview with Sky Sports.
Lambert, 45, was sacked by Villa in February after a dismal season, though his replacement Tim Sherwood appears to be getting more out of the Villa squad than Lambert ever did.
It’s therefore something of a surprise to see Lambert as short as 7/1 with some bookmakers to become the new manager of Borussia Dortmund.
The Bundesliga outfit are reeling after manager Jurgen Klopp announced he would be leaving the club at the end of the season, with the charismatic boss calling an end to his time at Signal Iduna Park.
Klopp won two Bundesliga titles and reached the 2013 Champions League final, becoming one of the most coveted managers in Europe as a result.
Now though, he’s off to pastures new – leaving Dortmund with a huge challenge in replacing him, with Thomas Tuchel currently the bookies favourite for the job.
Yet, there is also Lambert in the running. The Scot spent just over a year with Dortmund as a player in the 1990’s, and recently visited the club to take in training sessions alongside Klopp.
When asked by Sky Sports whether he would be applying to replace Klopp, Lambert didn’t do anything to play down that possibility – but also noted just how tough it will be to replace Klopp.
“I think in the summer I want to get back into football, whether it’s in England or abroad or whatever the case may be,” said Lambert. “I said before I don’t like commenting on any other person’s job, I think that’s unfair, but I’ve been going around looking at different training things.”
“It’s a club that I know really really well. It’s a club I had a lot of success at as a player, and it’s a special club. People don’t realise how big it is and how the fanbase is, but whoever follows Jurgen has got a big, big act to follow,” he added.
