West Ham United are in desperate need of January recruits and Slaven Bilic has been linked with a midfielder who once nearly lost use of his legs.
Under pressure: West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic
Slaven Bilic‘s side have lost eight of their opening 13 Premier League matches and look set for an unexpected relegation battle.
The latest defeat, a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of London rivals Arsenal, set alarm bells ringing as the Hammers slipped one point and one place above the bottom three.
The club’s summer transfer business has been the subject of scathing criticism from all quarters with only Edimilson Fernandes proving a success from the 10 first team players signed.
January business a must
Now Bilic must go into the volatile January market in search of players to help steer his side away from danger during what has been a nightmare first season at their new 60,000 Olympic Stadium home.
The club has already been linked with a host of players, the latest being Lyon outcast Clement Grenier – as reported by The Sun – a player who once nearly lost the use of his legs through injury.
Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Clement Grenier
The 25-year-old, who has five caps for France, is an attacking midfielder in the Dimitri Payet mould and was once a target for Arsenal and Newcastle United.
But his career has been blighted by injuries – something Hammers fans won’t be pleased to hear given the problems they have suffered this season.
Grenier has made just 146 appearances for Lyon in seven years, scoring 18 goals.
Grenier has played for every France age group
Back in 2014, it was widely reported that Newcastle had made a ‘substantial’ bid for Grenier but he injured his abductors and his recovery was delayed by an infection which left him ‘not far from losing the use of his legs’.
He then suffered a torn tendon in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal which set him back even further.
Grenier’s quality has never been in doubt, though, and just last week The Sun reported that Serie A giants Roma and AC Milan were ready to battle Bilic for his signature this January.
