It looks like Rangers almost signed Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks once upon a time.
Speaking to Open Goal, former Rangers player Andy Halliday revealed that he saw the Spurs man at the Gers’ Auchenhowie training ground during his spell at the club.
He said: “I remember doing a warm-up and Harry Winks came in for a day. He didn’t train though. I think everything was agreed and he was coming anyway. He was at the training ground being shown about. He didn’t train. A day later, it didn’t happen. He stayed at Tottenham.”
It remains to be seen when this nearly-deal occurred but it seems probable that it was during Mark Warburton’s spell at Ibrox.
Winks has been quite a well-thought of figure in Tottenham’s senior squad in recent years and therefore a switch to Rangers just would’ve made zero sense.
But he would’ve only been 19 when Warburton arrived in Glasgow and considering the English manager wound up signing two players from Spurs – Nathan Oduwa and Dominic Ball – it seems pretty certain that it was the London-born coach who tried to orchestrate the transfer.
The 2015-16 campaign was the season that Winks came through in North London and made his senior debut under Mauricio Pochettino, making cameo appearances in some Europa League games.
The next year, the England international clocked over 30 appearances in all competitions and a move to Rangers wouldn’t have been realistic once he established himself in North London.
