Michael Owen has claimed that ‘everyone has been blown away’ by Luis Diaz and the start he has made at Liverpool, as he told Premier League Productions.
On Tuesday night, the January signing from Porto, scored and assisted as Liverpool smashed helpless Manchester United 4-0 at Anfield.
It was another standout performance from the 25-year-old, who has added more life, energy, aggression and depth in quality to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Many on Merseyside expected Diaz to be a top talent, but to walk into a team of star-studded players and strut his stuff like he has been here for years is something special.
Owen expressed how people have been shocked by the winger’s frightening start, including Klopp himself not expecting it to become this good so quickly.
“Unbelievable, nobody would have foreseen that,” said Owen. “Everybody knew Diaz was a very good player, they hoped he was going to be a good player for the future.
“Similar to Jota. When he first signed, nobody could quite believe how he hit the ground running and Diaz has been exactly the same. It’s not taken him four, five or six games.
“He delivered it after minutes. As soon as he came on against Cardiff, it looked like that red shirt suited him.
“Everyone has been blown away by how good he is and how much he has suited this team already. It really is impossible to pick from the five of them. I don’t think he (Klopp) envisaged it to be this good.”
The scouting department at Liverpool must have some cheat code because their transfer recruitment over the years has been quite remarkable.
Window after window, they churn out players that produce performances that not many expect – and it’s not like they sign ready-made players.
Diogo Jota was seen as a top talent at Wolves, but not many would have expected him to derail that regular front three at Anfield, and with it, turn into a goalscoring machine.
Then there is somebody like Ibrahima Konate, who in his first season at the club, is showing signs that when Virgil van Dijk hands over his crown, then he can happily wear it upon his head with pride and quality.
