David Luiz told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Arsenal’s draw against Manchester United that he remained ‘focused’ as Bruno Fernandes tried to surprise him and his teammates before taking a free-kick on Saturday evening.
Just before the first half was drawing to a close, Arsenal gave away a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area.
Understandably, it was Man United’s dead-ball specialist who stepped up, but Arsenal held firm when Fernandes took the set-piece situation and Luiz could then be seeing fist-pumping as though his team had scored a goal.
After the game, the £8 million Arsenal man [Sky Sports] shared what happened during that moment and how Fernandes tried to put him off.
“I think one of the best players in the league,” said Luiz. “Taking free-kicks, shooting, Bruno is amazing.
“He can in these kinds of moments take a free-kick as a penalty. And you have to realise that when you play against a fantastic player, you have to try your best.
“He even spoke with me because he talk [and if you take the free-kick] quickly straight after the whistle. He tried to get everyone surprised but I was happy because I was focused and I could save the goal.”

Luiz was one of Arsenal’s best performers last night as his side’s much-improved defence added another clean sheet to their name.
Slowly but surely, Mikel Arteta is starting to progress this previously relegation-threatened Arsenal side.
Before Christmas, many were questioning whether those in North London were in a relegation battle, well in recent weeks, they have well and truly put that to bed.
