Alan Shearer has admitted that he would’ve loved to sample an Old Firm clash between Rangers and Celtic as a player.
In terms of rivalry, they don’t come much bigger or more hateful than Celtic facing Rangers.
The Newcastle United icon tasted the Tyne-Wear derby on a number of occasions, squaring off against Sunderland.
Asked by Gary Neville which famous fixture he would’ve liked to play in, Shearer said on The Overlap: “I obviously played in the Newcastle – Sunderland one. But the Glasgow one looks very interesting – very tasty!”
Neville responded: “Everyone says that.”
Spot on
Shearer is bang on the money – it is a very tasty fixture.
And you could argue that it’s become a lot more interesting in recent years, since Steven Gerrard took charge at Ibrox.
Celtic were a steamroller during Brendan Rodgers’s reign and even Rangers couldn’t lay a glove on them.
But Gerrard has broken the Hoops’ dominance in Scotland, denying them a 10th Scottish Premiership title in a row last term.
These days, the light Blues are invariably pre-match favourites to take the spoils in an Old Firm derby.
Rangers won the last one 1-0 but Ange Postecoglou’s side will be desperate to level things up on January 2, the next meeting between the pair.
