Graeme Souness told Sky Sports during their live coverage of Chelsea’s win against Leicester that he cannot see Harry Kane swapping Tottenham for their London rivals.
Whether Spurs fans believe it or not, or whether there is worry in North London that their boyhood fan will leave, but Sky Sports have reported that Kane is looking for the exit door.
Chelsea, alongside both Manchester clubs, have been mentioned as potential destinations for the England captain, who has topped the goalscoring and assists charts this season.
But given that Chelsea’s top scorer this season is a defensive-minded midfielder, Souness thinks they need a player like Kane, but he cannot see him joining them.
“That’s the problem,” said Souness. “Their top goalscorer is Jorginho with seven goals and all from penalties.
“I think with this Chelsea, if they had a, I cannot see a Harry Kane joining them but if they were to get Harry Kane or everyone on planet earth realises that Haaland is a real prospect. If they got him.
“Then I think they are really close to being a real team.”
There will be sections of Spurs fans who can perhaps understand why Kane wants to leave and they will lay the blame firmly at Daniel Levy’s door.
But he will damage his reputation with the Spurs faithful if he dons the colours of Chelsea, who aren’t even Premier League champions and they may not even finish in the Champions League places.
Whilst joining either Manchester clubs will still hurt, it will be more understandable, but in truth, if Kane does leave Spurs then their fans would perhaps prefer him to leave for Spain or France instead.
Either way, this is Levy’s chance to win some brownie points with the annoyed and frustrated Spurs fans by keeping their star man, bringing in a high-quality coach and also showing serious ambition in the transfer market.
