Tom Davies once stated that it was ‘good to hear’ that he was being compared with Steven Gerrard, who is now being linked with the Everton job.

The Everton academy product told talkSPORT that ‘everybody knows him’ and he would ‘love’ to match his feats as a player but in the colours of those at Goodison Park.

And amazingly enough, The Athletic reported that the Liverpool legend and current Rangers boss, 41, is on Everton’s potential list to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

It would be quite a shock if Gerrard ends up at Everton because of his Liverpool roots and the fact that he just won his first Scottish Premiership title with the Gers.

Nonetheless, this is what Davies had to say about Gerrard when he was once likened to the Anfield hero and what he thinks of him as an individual.

“Steven Gerrard was a quality player,” said Davies. “To even be compared to him is just good to hear.

“I wouldn’t say I’m exactly the same as him. My main focus is improving my game – I feel like I can become a quality player. It’s about reaching the potential that I have. It’s in my hands to dictate that. In my head I know I can be a top-quality player.

“Gerrard was a local lad. Around the city, everyone knows him. If I can do that for Everton, that’s the idea. I’d love to do that.”

The problem facing Everton is that they wouldn’t have had time to plan for Ancelotti’s departure because it was unexpected.

But now they are in a situation that the right individual needs to walk through their doors at such a critical period for the club because they will soon be moving into a new stadium.

Ideally, the next man through their doors will guide them into that new stadium, so if they get this one wrong then it can have quite the knock-on effect.

Added with that, they are also competing with the likes of Spurs, Crystal Palace, Celtic and Wolves for a new manager.
