Speaking on his podcast, Phil Hay has been discussing the deal that has seen Raphinha leave Leeds United and join Barcelona.
The Brazilian winger has been angling for a move to Camp Nou for months at this point, and now, he’s finally gotten his wish.
A deal was reached worth an initial £50m, but the price could reach £55m depending on some performance related add-ons.
According to Hay, it is highly likely that those add-ons are met and that Leeds do end up receiving the extra £5m from this deal further down the line.

Hay spoke about the Raphinha add-ons.
“There are also things in this, similarly to the Phillips deal, where fees are being waived and while that’s not money out of Barcelona’s pocket, Leeds will see it as a win,” Hay said.
“The Phillips fee was being spoken about as being worth circa £50m for Leeds even though the fee was £42m+£3m, and they say to them this one will be worth £60m to them even though the fee is £50m+5m. For what it’s worth I think they will get the £5m. Everyone is saying that those add-ons are not unachievable and are highly likely to be met given the club he’s going to and the type of player he is.”
Not a bad deal
Raphinha was Leeds’ best player last season, and while it will sting to lose him, receiving £55m softens the blow a fair bit.
This sale alongside the Phillips departure has allowed Leeds to completely rebuild the core of their squad, and if they’ve gotten their recruitment right, they shouldn’t be anywhere near a relegation battle this term.
An extra £5m in terms of add-ons doesn’t sound like a lot, but when it comes to balancing the books for FFP, that windfall will be a big helping hand in the coming years.
