Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Callum Wilson has been chatting about his admiration of Alan Shearer.
Wilson was joined the podcast by comedian and Leeds fan Jon Richardson, and understandably, Richardson was a little bit cut up by the sacking of Marcelo Bielsa this week.
Bielsa’s departure from Leeds got the pair onto the topic of footballing figures who transcend the sport in that they affect the club they’re at or the city they’re in immeasurably.
Richardson asked if there was anyone Bielsa-esque for Wilson at Newcastle, and he said that Shearer is that figure at St James’ Park.

The pair spoke about figures who go beyond football.
“Have you got anyone in your career who goes beyond football? I was thinking the closest person to Bielsa would be someone like Bobby Robson at Newcastle. Who is someone in your life who is more than football?” Richardson asked.
“For me, Alan Shearer. He played a big part in me joining Newcastle, he’s a big Newcastle legend. Everyone in the city looks up to him, and whatever he says in the media, everyone will agree with what he says, and for me, he’s given me advice, reached out to me when I did my ACL in 2016. He didn’t have to message me, I’d not really played in the Premier League but he took a liking to me and we’ve found our way to the same club that we’re both so passionate about now, and I guess that’s someone who has had an influence on my decision making,” Wilson said.

Alan Shearer is more than just a footballer in Newcastle.
Of course, it helps that he’s arguably the Magpies’ greatest ever player, but even before he put on a black and white shirt he was a Toon Army favourite.
He’s the classic story of a local lad come good, and in everything he does you can just tell how much he cares about Newcastle as a club and as a city.
Bielsa was a legend in the eyes of many Leeds fans, but Shearer is a hero to absolutely everybody on Tyneside.
