Ben Davies was thrilled to see Dele Alli get on the score sheet during Tottenham Hotspur’s 7-2 thumping of Maccabi Haifa, while telling the club’s official website that Sergio Reguilon will be a fine addition to Jose Mourinho’s squad.
Rarely has one man emerged from the Spurs bench amid such intense scrutiny.
But, if Alli felt under pressure to turn on the style after being left out of the squad for three of Spurs’ last four games, he didn’t show it during a 45-minute masterclass that reminded everyone of the sublime talent the under-fire 24-year-old possesses.
Alli capped an impressive cameo with a well-taken strike in stoppage time, firing home a penalty he won himself with a moment of magic that would not look out of place on FIFA Street.
And Davies, a long-time team-mate of the England international, was understandably thrilled to see Alli silence the critics with a performance reminiscent of his Pochettino-era heyday.
“Dele, he’s had a bit of a tough time lately but he was very, very good when he came on. I think everybody was delighted when he got his penalty,” said the left-back, who grabbed two assists on a night in which Harry Kane scored his first Spurs hat-trick since 2017.

Davies was Spurs’ only senior left-back last term but that has changed with the £20 million arrival of Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid.
After the speedy Spaniard caught the eye with a rampaging second-half display during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea, Davies responded with a fine attacking performance of his own against Maccabi Haifa.
“It has to, any top club you need competition for places and I think we’ll both relish that challenge,” the former Swansea City man says.
“(Reguilon) has come in, he played excellent in his first game and he’s a really good guy so we can bounce off each other and hopefully it will be good for the team.”
