Bernd Leno admits that Arsenal players all fell quiet in the dressing room after their defeat to Olympiacos, as per his comments on the club’s official website.
Arsenal went through against Olympiacos, but their performance last night was nothing to celebrate.
The Gunners fell well short of expectations and were actually beaten on the evening.
Thankfully for Arsenal they were in such a commanding position that the full-time result did not stop them progressing.
But Leno says that Arsenal’s dressing room was a very quiet place after the game.
And the £19 million German stopper (BBC Sport) insists that everyone at the club knows that their performance was nowhere near good enough.
“I think we suffered today and it was not necessary,” Leno told Arsenal Media.
“I think because in the first 15 or 20 minutes we controlled the game but then we’ve made too many easy mistakes and in the second half we conceded the goal and then everybody was nervous.
“We made it hard for ourselves and, like I said, it was not necessary.
“In the dressing room it was quiet because everybody knows that it was not a good performance from us. We cannot change it anymore but the positive thing is that it was a warning.
“We need to be 100 per cent every game. If we play like today then we won’t reach anything this season.”
Arsenal did have their chances against Olympiacos, but they were wasteful in front of goal.
Arteta’s side didn’t play with a great deal of enthusiasm, and made far too many errors.
Thankfully they were made to pay too heavily, but Leno is right in demanding more from his teammates.
Arsenal will find out who they play in the next round of the Europa League, when the draw is made later today.
