Paul Merson has made it clear that Antonio Conte needs to ‘continue starting Son every week’ despite the Tottenham Hotspur forward’s worrying form, as he told Sportskeeda.
The Sky Sports pundit shared how ‘the cream always rises to the top’ and he thinks Son Heung-min will resume his normal services in next to no time.
Whilst Merson calls for Son, who has only provided one assist this season, to remain in Tottenham’s XI, those watching from the stands probably think differently because of what is behind the South Korean star.
Dejan Kulusevski has been outstanding since he walked through the doors at Hotspur Way in January, and was dropped for his side’s most recent game, their 2-0 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League.
Whilst Richarlison is starting to grow as a player in north London, following his move from Everton, it would be harsh to drop a player that’s brought positive vibes, goals, strong performances and a level of aggression to Conte’s forward line.
Either way, the Italian has a big, big call to make during these coming days, and despite some feeling Son should now sit on the bench, Merson thinks the out-of-form player should continue to start.
“Tottenham are not playing well at the moment, let’s be honest,” said Merson. “The game against Sporting in the UEFA Champions League was a bad one for them, but in my opinion, it could help them in the long run.
“That said, I still fancy them to bounce back and beat Leicester City this weekend.
“Son Heung-min’s form has been a cause for concern. But I fancy him to return to his best. The cream always rises to the top, which is why I believe Antonio Conte needs to continue starting him every week.”
KULUSEVSKI DESERVES A SHOT
Last season, if Spurs and Son were in this situation, then he would have been given those starting minutes to try and get himself back to his best.
But, this isn’t a case of losing belief in Son or not letting him get his form back via starts, but handing those behind him a chance.
That’s why Conte has bought depth, he needs that competition and this is a great time to start Kulusevski, hopes he shines, alongside Richarlison, and then it will ignite a fire in Son.
All of that just bodes well for Spurs because, whenever their forward players are going to be on the pitch, they will be determined to put on a performance knowing they could be dropped the next game.
