Over the last few years, Newcastle United have set new transfer records multiple times.
The arrival of new owners has certainly led to increased spending at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe has brought in 17 players, some of whom are among the priciest signings in the club’s history.
A major signing has often played a key role in shaping Newcastle United’s direction. Players like Alan Shearer and Michael Owen each had a big impact on the club, though for very different reasons.
Here’s a look at every occasion since 1992 that Newcastle have set a new record transfer fee…

Andy Cole – £1.8 million – February 1993
Newcastle paid a club record fee to sign Andy Cole from Bristol City in a week where Kevin Keegan spent £3m, which was a staggering amount at the time.
Cole would go on to be sold to Manchester United for what was then a British record fee of £7 million.
Ruel Fox – £2.25 million – February 1994
Ruel Fox made the switch from Norwich to Newcastle for a fee of £2.25 million. When he arrived, Kevin Keegan called him “the best player in his position in the country.”
However, Fox never quite reached those expectations during his time on Tyneside.
Ruel Fox – £2.25 million – February 1994
Norwich winger Ruel Fox moved to Newcastle in 1994 for £2.25m. At the time, Kevin Keegan called him “the best player in his position in the country”.
However, he never quite matched the expectations that came with such high praise.
Darren Peacock – £2.7 million – March 1994
A month after signing Fox, Keegan brought in Darren Peacock for £2.7m, looking to solidify the defence during their debut Premier League season.
Warren Barton – £4.5 million – June 1995
Warren Barton joined Newcastle United for a fee of £4 million, setting a new record for the most expensive defender in English football at the time and adding to “The Entertainers” squad.
Les Ferdinand – £6 million – June 1996
Ferdinand, one of the most talented players never to win a Premier League title, joined Newcastle United in June 1996 from QPR. He spent just two seasons on Tyneside but quickly became a fan favourite, scoring goals for fun.
Faustino Asprilla – £7 million – February 1996
While Keegan’s side was in the thick of a Premier League title chase, they made a bold move by bringing in Colombian forward Faustino Asprilla from Parma for £7million.
Though he joined instead of Les Ferdinand and didn’t quite manage to push Newcastle over the line, Asprilla still holds a special place in club lore. His memorable hat-trick against Barcelona is one moment fans will always cherish.
Alan Shearer – £15million – July 1996
A few months after Tino Asprilla’s arrival, Newcastle raised the stakes again, setting a new transfer record. This time, it was a world record fee.
Alan Shearer joined from Blackburn Rovers for £15 million, becoming the most expensive footballer at that time. He went on to become Newcastle’s all-time top scorer and still holds the record for most goals in Premier League history. There was never any doubt it was money well spent.
Michael Owen – £17 million – August 2005
In the nine years following Shearer’s arrival, Newcastle brought in another England international. This time it was Michael Owen, who made the move from Real Madrid to St James’ Park, but it didn’t quite work out.
He was part of the squad that suffered relegation in 2009, departing on a free transfer that same summer. Owen left behind a record of 30 goals in 79 games for the Magpies.
Almiron’s move to St James’ Park
Newcastle United waited a while before smashing their transfer record again. Nearly 14 years after Michael Owen, the club signed Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United.
For £21 million, it looked like a shrewd signing early on, with Newcastle finally spending big. The Paraguayan looked right at home in the Premier League early on.
He did go through a rough patch under Steve Bruce, but Eddie Howe managed to get the best out of him once again.
Joelinton – £40 million – July 2019
In 2019, just a few months after signing Almiron, Mike Ashley set a new transfer record again by bringing in Joelinton from Hoffenheim for £40 million. There was only one problem. He didn’t know how to score goals.
But Joelinton’s story at Newcastle is nothing short of remarkable. He went from being considered a flop to becoming one of the club’s most important players, finding his place as a standout midfielder – something no one could have predicted.
Alexander Isak – £63 million – August 2022
In August 2022, Eddie Howe secured the services of Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad for £63 million, marking the first time Newcastle’s new ownership group broke the club’s transfer record.
Nick Woltemade – £65m (rising to £69m) – August 2025
After three years, Newcastle once again set a new transfer record in August 2025.
It had been a challenging transfer window, with the club missing out on several striker targets before finally landing Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.
Newcastle managed to beat Bayern Munich to his signature, agreeing to an initial fee of £65m, potentially rising to £69m with add-ons.
