Alasdair Gold has claimed on his YouTube channel that all offers made for Djed Spence from Premier League clubs included options to buy.
Spence signed for Tottenham in the summer transfer window, but he has just joined Rennes on loan.
A loan abroad may seem like a strange move for Spence at this point, but Spurs were not willing to do a deal with any interested domestic party as they all wanted the option to take him permanently.
The likes of Crystal Palace, Brentford and Southampton had targeted him on loan.
According to Gold, Tottenham were not keen to let Spence go on loan with an option to buy – suggesting that they do see a long-term future for the player at the club

Gold shared what he knows about Spence’s move to Rennes.
“What I have to make clear is that throughout the whole process, neither Spence or the club were willing to look at options or obligations to buy, and I think that is what nixed any possibility of a Premier League move. Every Premier League offer had an option or obligation to buy,” Gold said.
“Djed Spence is of the opinion that he can be successful at Tottenham. What I understand is that when it came down to it at the end, Spence had the choice of five clubs from across Europe. He rejected Atletico Madrid and Sassuolo because he wanted to go to Rennes.”
Has a future
One has to assume that Spence has a future at Tottenham after hearing this.
The club didn’t want to get him off the books permanently, and that has to be because they have a long-term plan for him.
Pedro Porro’s arrival will make it tougher for Spence to get a game, but at the age of just 22, he has plenty of time to kick on and show Tottenham he’s got what it takes to be a star.
