More than half of Formula 1’s current drivers live in Monaco. While they spend much of the year flying around the globe, they can commute to the sport’s most famous race in minutes.
Of course, that’s not their main motivation for living there. Aside from French citizens, Monaco residents don’t have to pay income, wealth or capital gains tax.
The second smallest country in the world after The Vatican, it offers the drivers safety, privacy and a luxury lifestyle. There are strict rules preventing them from being photographed by the media without permission.
Max Verstappen will typically take his private jet from the nearby Nice airport when he attends races. Many other drivers fly from the same venue.
Lewis Hamilton and 11 other Formula 1 drivers live in Monaco
Lewis Hamilton moved to Monaco shortly before he left McLaren and has remained there ever since. Fellow world champions Verstappen and Lando Norris have joined him.
Hamilton’s Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc is one of only three Monegasque drivers to start an F1 race. Leclerc, who memorably won the Grand Prix in 2024, has stayed in his hometown.
Other big-name residents include Mercedes’ George Russell, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Williams’ Carlos Sainz.
Newcomers like Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Oliver Bearman (Haas) and Franco Colapinto (Alpine) have recently moved into Monaco properties too.
Alex Albon of Williams and Nico Hulkenberg of Audi complete the list for now, but it may soon get longer.
Fernando Alonso is one of the few F1 stars living outside Monaco
Where else do F1 drivers live? Switzerland, another nation with favourable taxation policies, is a popular destination, having welcomed Haas’ Esteban Ocon and Aston Martin duo Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Yuki Tsunoda and Pierre Gasly, who used to race for the Faenza-based Racing Bulls team, both live in Italy.
It’s worth noting that many drivers own multiple residences, so they will move around depending on the calendar. Every team except Ferrari has a base in the United Kingdom, so most spend multiple weeks of the year there, all told.
