Ronald Koeman’s well-laid transfer plans might be hindered with Ramiro Funes Mori’s injury.

On Thursday, reports emerged that defender Ramiro Funes Mori has suffered a setback in his recovery from the serious knee injury (meniscus tear) he picked up during international duty with Argentina. This latest development might force Ronald Koeman’s hand and hinder his well-laid transfer plans for the upcoming season.

The Blues have been one of the most active clubs in the transfer window so far having signed Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Henry Onyekuru, Sandro Ramirez, Michael Keane, Josh Bowler, and Wayne Rooney (free, Manchester United).

They are also continuing their pursuit of Swansea attacking midfielder Gylfi Sigurðsson, according to BBC Sport and might be looking to sign another striker ahead of next season with Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud linked with the blues.

However, with Funes Mori’s injury, the Blues look short of numbers at the back. The Argentine international would have undoubtedly provided cover for the duo of Michael Keane and Ashley Williams at the back, but more importantly, he provided cover at the left back position for Leighton Baines.

The only other alternative for the left back position in the squad is Luke Garbutt, who despite being 24-years-old has played just 12 games for the Toffees since making his move from Leeds back in 2009. An experienced manager like Koeman would undoubtedly address the situation, and that might lead to the Merseyside giants having to compromise with their deals for players elsewhere.

The potential £30 million the Blues might get for selling Ross Barkley now might be detrimental to the success and failure of their transfer window.
