Things might be a little awkward at England’s next get together, after Everton’s Michael Keane liked a tweet mocking his international teammate, Liverpool’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain signed for Liverpool in a deal reported to be worth £35 million at the end of the summer transfer window, raising a few eyebrows in the process.

And the 24-year-old is yet to experience a win for his new employers, despite appearing in all three of their fixtures following his move.

After Rio Ferdinand this week announced his intention to take up professional boxing in his retirement from football, one Twitter user sensed an opportunity.

“Rio Ferdinand isn’t the only person to so a sport he’s not used to…,” he wrote.

“For instance Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been having a go at football.”

And of the 1,000-plus people to have liked the tweet, one was particularly prominent.

Whether or not Keane, who moved from Burnley to Everton this summer for slightly less than Oxlade-Chamberlain cost Liverpool, meant to respond in that manner remains to be seen.

But the former Manchester United defender has since retracted the ‘like’ – albeit not before the above screenshot was widely shared on social media.

Keane, whose Everton side sit four points and 10 places behind their city rivals after five games, made his England debut earlier this year and has two caps to his name – 27 fewer than Oxlade-Chamberlain.
