Tottenham Hotspur were linked with Everton full-back Lucas Digne over the summer, and he could have been a great addition.

Everton defender Lucas Digne’s continued excellence is showing just what Tottenham Hotspur missed out on this summer.

The Daily Star suggested that Tottenham had an interest in signing Digne from Everton for £36 million over the summer, but they failed to do a deal.

Whether Everton would have been prepared to sell is a matter very much up for debate.

The Toffees are under no financial pressure, and Digne is a hugely popular figure at Goodison Park.

But Digne is proving once and for all that he would have had the quality to be a part of Tottenham’s squad.

The French international had a wonderful first season at Everton, creating five goals and scoring four times, and he has just continued where he left off this time around.

Digne scored a brilliant free kick for Everton in the Carabao Cup last night, and he also has an assist to his name in the Premier League already this term.

At Tottenham, meanwhile, first choice left-back Danny Rose has badly struggled in the first three games this term, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men starting very slowly.

Rose’s final delivery has been so wasteful, with Spurs finding it hard to break down sides who have sat deep.

Tottenham’s full-backs have had plenty of the ball, particularly in their opening two home games, but they have failed to pick out their teammates with any sort of quality.

Digne’s crossing, on the other hand, ranks among the very best in England right now, and the sort of service that he would deliver is exactly what Harry Kane has been crying out for in Tottenham’s opening games.

And although it is questionable whether Tottenham would have been able to pull off the signing of Digne, he clearly would have been a brilliant addition to Pochettino’s side if they got hold of him.
