Steve Walsh is bringing some very talented young players to Everton with Sheffield United’s David Brooks reportedly next in line.
The future is bright at Everton and not just because majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri funded the biggest summer spend in the club’s history.
While The Toffees paid huge sums on established talent like Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford and club-record signing Gylfi Sigurdsson, director of football Steve Walsh has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the next generation is even more talented than the current crop.
Walsh’s remit is understood to revolve around identifying some of Europe’s top talent and bringing them to Goodison Park (Liverpool Echo) and, so far, he appears to have done his job well.
And the Sunday People (10th September) states that another of the country’s most talented youngsters could be joining them at Goodison Park. Everton have been tracking the progress of 20-year-old Sheffield United star David Brooks for some time and are understood to be leading the chase for his signature.
Brooks, who honed his trade in Manchester City’s academy, won the Golden Ball after scoring in the final of England’s triumphant Toulon Tournament this summer and would be yet another highly talented homegrown prospect making the move to Merseyside.
The midfielder would not be the first highly-rated youngster to move to Goodison Park since Walsh was appointed last summer. The likes of Henry Onyekuru, Nikola Vlasic and Ademola Lookman may have cost a pretty penny but there are other, more under-the-radar additions that also offer an exciting glimpse at Everton’s future plans.
As reported by The Mirror, Everton will pay up to £2.5 million for 18-year-old QPR winger Josh Bowler while a deal to bring 17-year-old left-back Lewis Gibson from Newcastle United could reach £6 million (The Sun).
The present is bright but the future could be even more so at Everton.
