Newcastle United have reportedly had to pull out of the race for Everton’s Leighton Baines due to his wage demands.

Leighton Baines may live to regret not taking his chance to join Newcastle United, if he doesn’t lower his wage demands.

The Chronicle claim that Newcastle have an interest in the Everton man, but simply cannot afford to pay his salary.

Baines is on £70,000-a-week at Everton, according to the Daily Star, and Newcastle do not have the funds to match that.

But the veteran defender may wish that he had taken his chance to move to Newcastle, as this season progresses.

Baines’ place in Everton’s first-team looks in serious doubt – with Lucas Digne set to arrive.

Digne looks almost certain to be Marco Silva’s side’s first choice left-back next term, with Baines set to be a reserve option.

At Newcastle, however, Baines would be a prominent starter in Rafael Benitez’s side.

And not doing everything in his power to force a move to the Magpies may turn out to be an error for Baines.
