Everton’s Leighton Baines shares the moment his heart sank

Everton chalked up their first win since September at the weekend.

Toffees ace Leighton Baines spoke exclusively to the club’s official website, and described the moment when his heart sank, as Watford were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time last weekend.

Everton eventually beat the Hornets 3-2 after former player Tom Cleverley failed to convert for the visitors from the spot, and it was a massive three points for the Merseyside outfit, lifting them to 15th position in the Premier League table.

The Blues have endured a woeful campaign both home and abroad this term, after a return of just 11 points from 11 league games, and the possibility of qualifying though to the next stage of the Europa League already beyond them, after just four group games played.

The Toffees are still without a permanent manager, following the sacking of Ronald Koeman last month, and it is unclear as to whether temporary boss David Unsworth will be given a chance to prove his worth on a permanent basis.

Lat week’s win over Watford would have boosted his chances though, that much is certain, and Baines talked about the topsy-turvy game, when speaking to the club’s official website, highlighting the importance of the end result:

“If we had come away from that game without a victory, it would certainly be a different feeling. It puts us under no illusions as to what has gone before and the situation that we are in, which is not good enough for this club.There was quite a lot of relief. It was obvious it was late in the game and one of the last chances we had to win the game, there was a bit of a wait to take the penalty where you have to keep yourself composed in that time. It was nice to see it go in, but my heart sank when we conceded the penalty at the other end but we finally got a bit of a luck and our effort probably deserved it.”

Next up for Baines and Everton is a trip to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on November 18th, and last weekend’s win over Watford will mean nothing if they fail to back it up with another three points against the Eagles.
