Everton tried to tempt the Watford manager to Goodison Park.
As reported by the BBC, Watford have rejected an approach from Everton for their manager Marco Silva, but why have the Toffees waited so long to make a move for the 40-year-old in the first place?
Everton parted company with former manager Ronald Koeman 22 days ago, so why did it take this long for them to approach Silva – even if that attempt would ultimately prove fruitless.
The Toffees were never going to tempt a big-name manager to the club given their current struggles and the lack of a quality striker until January at the earlier, so they should have drawn up a realistic list of targets prior to Koeman’s inevitable dismissal.
If they wanted Sam Allardyce, they should have given him the job before the international break and, if they wanted Silva, they should have moved for him quickly in order to look at alternatives if required, not dawdle to such an extent that we are approaching a month since Everton last had a permanent manager.
Sacking Koeman was not a knee-jerk reaction; it was a very long time coming. And the best boards make sure they have prepared for that eventuality, even if they do not show their cards publicly.
Instead Everton fans face the near future with uncertainty, at exactly the time of the season when they need some stability.
