Virginia moved to Reading on loan from Everton earlier this summer.

Joao Virginia of Reading looks on during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Reading and Chelsea at Madejski Stadium on July 28, 2019 in Reading, England.

The Everton goalkeeper Joao Virginia has already lost his place at loan club Reading.

Virginia moved to Reading on a season-long deal earlier this summer and played in the Royals’ first two Championship matches.

But after shipping five goals in that time – including one against Hull for which he was criticised by his own supporters – the 2018 Everton recruit was dropped to the bench for Sunday’s win against Cardiff.

Virginia’s replacement, Rafael, the twice-capped Brazil international, also arrived at the Madejski Stadium in the summer transfer window.

It was he who took the youngster’s place against Neil Warnock’s side.

Rafael Cabral celebrates his sides second goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Reading and Cardiff City at Madejski Stadium on August 18, 2019 in Reading, England.

And after keeping a clean sheet on his debut, Rafael is likely to retain his place for now, which could lead to a frustrating few months for Virginia.

Everton cannot officially recall Virginia until the transfer window reopens in January, and may require Reading’s blessing to do so.
