The Everton midfielder would be a superb addition to the Burnley squad this summer.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche has a lot of work to do at Turf Moor once again this summer, if he is to build a squad capable of fending off relegation, much like they did last season.
In order to enjoy a successful campaign this term, the Lancashire outfit will surely have to add proven Premier League experience to their squad, with the defensive midfield department being a particular area in need of improvement.
Reports emerged yesterday that Burnley are one of two Premier League clubs interested in signing Toffees star Gareth Barry, according to the Daily Mail, and what an acquisition that would be for the club, if Dyche can make it happen.
Everton’s Gareth Barry in action
The 36-year-old is the embodiment of professionalism, and has proven throughout his highly-distinguished career that he really is amongst the elite group of defensive midfielders.
Barry is tenacious in the tackle, and plays with a certain level of aggression that would fit perfectly into Dyche’s vision of how he likes the game to be played, with 100 per cent commitment being a prerequisite for any potential Burnley signing.
Despite his advancing years, the Everton midfielder has kept himself in excellent shape, and could easily go on to play another few years at the top level, if he so desires.
The former England international is not all about the unfashionable sides of the game, however, and possesses a wonderfully effective left-foot, and that combined with his superb vision could prove to be an asset for Burnley in the final third.
Barry has just 12 months remaining on his current deal on Merseyside, so the Clarets should be able to pick him up for a bargain, should they so wish.
And what a signing it could turn out to be, if Dyche manages to get a deal over the line for the 36-year-old.
