Everton could reportedly pay just £10 million after signing Fabian Delph this summer.
While Fabian Delph may not have been one of the headline-grabbing players in the Manchester City side during his four years with the club, Everton’s move for the England international looks to be one of the smartest pieces of business that any Premier League outfit will do this summer.
BBC Sport reports that the 29-year-old has moved to Goodison Park in a deal that could cost up to £10 million. Even if the Toffees have to pay the full amount, there is every chance that Delph will be worth every penny during his time on Merseyside.
Delph rarely let City down when he did play, and that is a particularly impressive achievement given that he spent much of his spell under Pep Guardiola filling it at left-back. The importance Guardiola places on his full-backs is no secret, so for Delph to play there so often says a lot about the faith placed in him by one of the greatest minds in modern football.
City may not miss Delph too much, but £10 million has the makings of being an absolute steal for Everton. It is the kind of deal that fans could potentially still be trying to get their heads around several years from now.
And if the supporters needed any further proof that the Toffees have done a fantastic piece of business, it has surely come from reports from the Daily Mail at the weekend suggesting that Crystal Palace have made an £8 million bid for James McCarthy.
It must be noted that Everton want £10 million for the midfielder, so it is, by no means, a safe bet to assume that McCarthy will be heading to Selhurst Park this summer.
But when you consider that McCarthy has played once for the Toffees in the last 18 months – partially due to the horrific leg break he suffered in January 2018 – it seems like the kind of bid that Everton should be more than happy with.
McCarthy has been a good signing, but he does not appear to be in Silva’s plans, and there is unlikely to be any protests staged if he is allowed to move on to join Palace.
Delph is only one year older than McCarthy, has two title medals to his name, arguably offers more versatility and has played a lot more football over the last three seasons. And Everton have just received a bid for McCarthy that would cover almost all of what they paid for Delph in what already looked to be one of the deals of the window.
