Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin has told The Guardian that he has been trying to be a little more like Pippo Inzaghi.
The Toffees have enjoyed a 100% start to the season, and sit top of the Premier League with 12 points from four games.
The star of the show so far has been striker Calvert-Lewin, even ahead of playmaking sensation James Rodriguez.
In four Premier League outings this season, Calvert-Lewin has bagged six goals, whilst he has also hit three goals in two Carabao Cup games.
Nine goals in six games across all competitions is frankly ridiculous from Calvert-Lewin, and that form has been rewarded with an England call-up.
Calvert-Lewin is enjoying a remarkable rise under Carlo Ancelotti, who has likened his play to that of his former AC Milan hitman Pippo Inzaghi.
Inzaghi was the classic penalty-box striker, scoring goals from close-range whilst becoming one of Ancelotti’s favourites at the San Siro.
Calvert-Lewin has admitted that he is now taking the comparison to heart, as he is looking to score more goals from close-range rather than being away from goal, and that’s why his goal record is so good this term.
“Carlo’s definitely had a positive influence on me,” said Calvert-Lewin. “Beforehand I was guilty of doing a lot of my best work away from goal and now I’m focused on getting between the sticks and putting the ball in the net. That analogy from Carlo – it’s not to say I’m a carbon copy of Inzaghi but if there’s elements of his game that I’ve been showing it’s one-touch finishes and being in the right place at the right time,” he added.
