Everton summer signing Bernard has told the Liverpool Echo that Marco Silva has urged for calm after his side’s heartbreaking derby defeat at the weekend.

Everton were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool on Sunday in a game where they proved a match for their Merseyside rivals for large portions of the contest.

Everton deserved to take at least a point from Anfield, but their hard work was undone in the last minute in freak circumstances.

Jordan Pickford made a howler which allowed Divock Origi to tap in the winner from close range.

And Bernard now says that Everton need to respond by staying calm, despite the unfortunate defeat.

The Brazilian said: “It’s important that we continue to work, continue to develop and continue to focus and then, hopefully, we can soon be fighting at the top of the table.

“The manager told us to keep our heads up, continue doing what we’re doing and focus on our match on Wednesday.”

Everton are back in action later this evening, when they will be looking to put the disappointment of the weekend behind them.

The Toffees take on Newcastle United at Goodison Park later, and if they are bale to pick up a victory, they will consolidate their position in sixth place in the Premier League table.
