Rangers desperately need to sign a striker this summer.

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Steven Gerrard has already brought seven new players to Rangers this summer as he instantly puts his mark on the Light Blues’ squad – but he still desperately needs a new striker.

Alfredo Morelos is reportedly in talks with Turkish giants Besiktas ahead of a move after scoring 18 goals last term, while Eduardo Herrera has been told by Gerrard that his game time will be limited.

Jason Cummings has returned to Championship side Nottingham Forest after his loan, and Gerrard needs to act quickly before the start of the 2018-19 campaign – with Rangers kicking off their campaign in a week’s time.

A loan deal will be quickest to conclude for Rangers, and they should target Everton’s Scottish wonderkid Fraser Hornby to add cover in the final third after the 18-year-old powerhouse secured a new three-year Everton contract.

Hornby enjoyed an excellent campaign Everton last season, scoring 16 goals in 20 Under-18 Premier League appearances before being promoted to the club’s reserve side where he scored three in 13.

His excellent form even saw Hornby earn his full Everton debut, leading the line for The Toffees against Apollon Limassol in the Europa League under former England boss Sam Allardyce.

Hornby then earned his new contract at Everton after turning out for Scotland’s Under-21 side at the Toulon Tournament, starring in all five games as Scotland reached the semi-finals. He even scored against Togo during a 1-1 draw.

Everton have plenty of strikers available, including Cenk Tosun, Dom Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse, so Hornby’s chances of first-team football are unlikely. But his next step in terms of development needs to be senior football.

It could mean that Everton would be willing to send Scottish youngster Hornby north of the border if Rangers do become interested in the target man. One thing is for sure, Hornby would be an excellent signing for the Gers.
