Everton have a new back up centre back.
It came as little surprise that Everton decided to part ways with veteran defender Phil Jagielka this week.
The 36-year-old was merely a back up last season, making only seven appearances, and Everton are looking to the future.
It can be no coincidence then that yesterday Everton also announced a one-year contract extension for 21-year-old centre-back Matty Foulds.
Foulds’ contract had been set to expire this summer. Everton are giving themselves extra insurance by extending him for another year.
Foulds told the club website: “I think I’ve got better and better each year I’ve been at Everton – I’ve got stronger, fitter and improved technically. I want to keep that going.”
Everton clearly agree with the progress he is making and did not want to lose him.
With uncertainty over the future of departing loanee Kurt Zouma, Everton risk being low on numbers at centre-back if injuries and suspensions strike.
Keeping Foulds around is a prudent move, and he can potentially fulfil the Jagielka role next season, stepping in occasionally when required.
If Everton decide against it and that he’s not ready, there’s nothing lost, but the club are sensible to give themselves the option.
