The Portuguese ace is reportedly wanted by Liverpool, but Everton should gatecrash the party.

Toffees fans must be ecstatic with the transfer business that their side has completed so far this summer, but like any set of football fans, they will surely be expecting further arrivals.

Everton are expected to make a real push for the Champions League spots this season, and despite Ronald Koeman’s already impressive business, the addition of a real top quality star could truly take them to another level.

With Yannick Bolasie and Aaron Lennon expected to be unavailable for the foreseeable future, the Dutchman will surely be looking to bolster his options in the wide attacking areas, and with this in mind, he should look to sign Sporting Lisbon winger Gelson Martins, who has been linked with a £43.7 million move to fierce rivals Liverpool, according to Portuguese media outlet A Bola.

The talented Portugal international enjoyed a fine season in the Primeira Liga last term, contributing with six goals and nine assists in 32 outings for Sporting.

The 22-year-old plays with a certain level of maturity that defies his years, and has displayed his exceptional technical ability, along with blistering pace on a remarkably consistent basis.

Martins’ would provide fantastic competition in the wide attacking areas at Goodison Park, and would offer Koeman a totally different option when selecting his starting XI.

Whilst the £43.7 million fee seems rather steep for someone so young and unproven in England, the current state of the transfer market dictates those sort of prices, and the Toffees are by no means short of funds, as they have proven already this summer.

And if Koeman manages to bring the Sporting man to Everton, it could prove to be the signing that catapults them into the bracket of genuine top-four contenders.
