There are a number of Premier League clubs reportedly keen on Everton’s Mason Holgate.
Everton are keen to add defensive legs to their squad ahead of Thursday’s deadline, but whilst they will need that extra defender to arrive, they do have a player in Mason Holgate who can help them out at the back.
The Sun recently claimed that Holgate is in the middle of a tug-of-war for his permanent signature, with the likes of Sheffield United, Bournemouth and Burnley all keen to sign him.
For the second half of last season, Holgate was on-loan at West Brom, where he played at right-back and helped the Midlands outfit to the Championship play-off semi-finals.
Despite missing out on promotion, he impressed one and all at the club as he was deployed at right-back during his time at the Hawthorns.
Holgate can also play at centre-back, and whilst it is perhaps his preference to play at the heart of the defence, his versatility shouldn’t go under the radar.
Whilst the 22-year-old isn’t the finished article, Everton potentially allowing him to leave days before the deadline would be a mistake.
Marco Silva should give the Doncaster-born player a crack at trying to prove his worth at Goodison Park because his spell at West Brom has helped improve his game.
Plus, with the Toffees seemingly looking for another centre-back and right-back, Holgate’s ability to play both roles over the course of a gruelling campaign would prove to be very useful.
It is fair to say that if Holgate doesn’t get the chance to prove his worth at Everton in these next 12 months then he would find it difficult making a name for himself on Merseyside.
