Brighton and Hove Albion stunned Marco Silva’s Everton on Saturday by coming from behind to claim a brilliant 3-2 Premier League win.
To say Leandro Trossard changed the game would be an understatement.
Brighton and Hove Albion were a team transformed when their £15 million winger came off the bench at home to Everton on Saturday. Making his first appearance since a drubbing by Manchester City in August thanks to a groin injury, Trossard performed like he’d never been away.
The former Genk captain tore Marco Silva’s defence apart with his pace and skill. And, with 95 minutes on the clock, he set up the winning goal too in a topsy-turvy 3-2 win in the driving South Coast rain when his devilish cross was sliced home by a desperate Lucas Digne.
Everton had been 2-1 up and seemingly en route to successive Premier League victories so the eventual defeat, and the manner of it, did little to ease the growing pressure on head coach Marco Silva. And, to make matters worse, Trossard could have been wearing Everton’s colours rather than Brighton’s at the Amex.
The Express (5 May, pull-out page 5) claimed that the Merseysiders were confident of snapping up a man whose 22 goals and 11 assists fired Genk to the 2018 Jupiler League title during the summer transfer window, only to see him seal a big-money move to Brighton instead.
And considering the way Theo Walcott toiled on the right, wasting a pair of glorious opportunities with just three goals to his name in his last 40 games in all competitions, seeing Trossard single-handedly turn the game in Brighton’s favour in the dying seconds only adds to the mounting frustration among the Toffees faithful.
