Everton were linked with Chris Wood earlier this year, so why did they seemingly not make a greater effort to sign him?

Back in April, Calciomercato reported that Everton were amongst the Premier League sides who were interested in Chris Wood after his fantastic season in the Championship with Leeds.

It was August before Wood finally did seal a switch to the top flight, with Burnley spending £15 million on bringing him to Turf Moor (via BBC Sport).

And based on Everton’s start to the season coupled with their most recent result, Ronald Koeman must surely be scratching his head wondering why he seemingly did not follow up the Toffees’ initial interest in Wood and allowed him to move elsewhere.

Everton are currently languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table, and have scored just four goals in the top flight during their opening seven games, with Wayne Rooney and Oumar Niasse the only players to have found the back of the net this term.

Meanwhile, Wood has also scored twice for a Burnley side that go into the international break in sixth, while also bagging another goal when he came up against his former club in the League Cup.

And while he did not score, the New Zealander was excellent in the win over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Wood’s record may be no better than Rooney’s or Niasse’s in the league this term, but it could certainly be argued that his height, strength and finishing ability would have made him a fantastic option to have to capitalise on the chances that the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson would love to create for a focal point in their team.

And given that Everton spent over £140 million on new signings in the summer, according to Transfermarkt, spending £15 million on a forward who scored 27 Championship goals last term should have surely not been too daunting a prospect for the Toffees.
