Everton manager Ronald Koeman is said to be very keen to bring the Manchester United captain to Goodison Park.

It could well be the biggest and most surprising turnaround in recent years. Wayne Rooney, who left Everton in 2004 to join Manchester United, has been linked with a return to his hometown club, and Bleacher Report are suggesting that the Toffees are now looking at the financial intricacies of a move.

Rooney’s wages are likely to be higher than any Everton player currently at Goodison Park, and with the possibility of the big money of the Chinese Super League on the table, Ronald Koeman will need to make Everton a very appealing place to the England striker.

Rooney may not need much convincing though. As well as the Toffees being the club he supported as a child, Rooney will know that playing in the Premier League provides his best chance at keeping his place in the England national side. As well as this, top players often want to play at the highest level for as long as possible. Rooney will likely be no different.

However, Everton fans might be split over the move. Over the past few years, the club has worked hard to invest in young talent, and have recently been reaping the rewards of such a policy, seeing players like John Stones, Tom Davies, Ross Barkley and Ademola Lookman all flourish.

A move for Wayne Rooney would see a significant shift in policy, signing a player for a huge fee, on huge money, who is 31-years-old. But is a move for such a big player simply too good to turn down?

Away from the transfer policy, there’s also the matter of the vitriol that has been put forward by Everton fans towards Wayne Rooney over the years. Many Toffees supporters were angry to see their star player leave for Manchester United at such a young age, and the striker still at times receives a frosty reception when the two sides play each other.

With the move having been over 13 years ago though, is it time to forgive and forget?
