Watford have sacked Claudio Ranieri – and Jobi McAnuff thinks Everton target Fabio Cannavaro is a strong contender for the job.

Friday’s 3-0 home thumping at the hands of Norwich City proved to be the end for Ranieri at Watford.

An ill-fated move, Ranieri leaves Watford having won just twice in 14 games since arriving in October.

The Hornets look doomed at this point and are now searching for a third manager of the season having also axed Xisco Munoz earlier in the campaign.

Roy Hodgson is the favourite for the job and looks set to come out of retirement to try and lead Watford away from the relegation zone.

Former Watford winger Jobi McAnuff has now offered his view – and it may impact Everton.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McAnuff has suggested that Fabio Cannavaro has been spotted in and around the Watford boardroom.

McAnuff believes Cannavaro has been in the shadows as a potential replacement for Ranieri, offering an option if Watford go Italian again.

“Fabio Cannavaro might be one. He’s been spotted in and around the boardroom, which is never helpful when you are a manager in trouble, seeing big names and potential successors.”

“They have gone quite left field at times and scoured the market for European names that, potentially, we are not too aware of. So could be anyone with Watford,” he added.

It looks like being Hodgson rather than Cannavaro, but he’s a name to keep a close eye on if a deal for Hodgson falls through.

Everton also have to be considered in the Cannavaro discussion too having interviewed for the Toffees job according to The Telegraph.

Cannavaro, 48, has won two league titles in his career; the Chinese second tier and the Chinese Super League.

His record with Guangzhou Evergrade was largely impress, losing just 35 times in 154 games across two spells at the club.

Cannavaro left Guangzhou in September and now wants a big job in Europe, with Everton certainly fitting the bill.

A World Cup winner in his playing days, Cannavaro is a big name but maybe doesn’t have the managerial CV that many Premier League teams are seeking.

Watford look set to go elsewhere for their new manager, and don’t be surprised if Everton do the same.
