Everton have emerged as a surprise contender in the race for Tottenham attacker Steven Bergwijn this summer – a target Dele Alli praised in 2020. Bergwijn has openly admitted he is ready to leave Spurs.

The 24-year-old has endured a difficult time at Spurs since joining the club in January 2020. In two and a half seasons, he has only managed to play 83 times. Of those 83 outings, he has started just 38 games.

Last week, after a goal for the Netherlands in a 4-1 win over Belgium, Bergwijn said that he is open to leave Spurs for the best option. He also hinted he could be on his way back to his home country with Ajax.

But the Mail claim that Everton are also interested in signing £17m-rated Bergwijn – having done business with Spurs in January for Dele. The new Toffees ace was full of praise for Bergwijn back in 2020, as per Football London.

“Steve is a new player who has come in and done very well and a top guy as well. He’s a great player and a great person as well,” Dele said two years ago, when asked about Bergwijn after an injury.

Dele praise of Everton target Bergwijn – good signing?

Everton have numerous options in the final third. Alex Iwobi, Anthony Gordon, Richarlison, Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend have all been used out wide by Everton this season – all impressing at times.

So, do Everton really need another attacking winger? Anwar El Ghazi came in on loan in January but managed just two appearances for the Toffees. Bergwijn is a top player and at £17million, a good buy. But Everton do not need him.
