Everton are looking to arrest their alarming decline in the league against a side that’s on a very good run in Manchester City, who will be looking to at least keep pace with Chelsea at the top of the table, if not leapfrog them.
To be played on Saturday 10th January 2015 at 15:00. Venue: Goodison Park, Liverpool
Odds: Everton 10/3, Draw 14/5, Man City 11/12
Everton may have ended their losing run in the FA Cup tie against West Ham United but they are currently on a losing streak having lost each of their last four Premier League games which could have them looking over their shoulders with the unthinkable even possible – yes, a relegation battle. But Roberto Martinez is still trying to be positive during this difficult run, and hopes Romelu Lukaku’s equaliser in the week can spark some kind of revival.
Antonlin Alcaraz returns from suspension for the home side whilst Leighton Baines is expected to return as Everton look to pull away from the bottom end of the table as they are only four points clear of the danger zone.
The champions have received a massive injury boost in the form of three key players. Vincent Kompany returns to the squad to provide a little more solidity to the defence, whilst forwards Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero – the goalscorers from last season’s fixture – are both available. They may not have Yaya Toure at their disposal because of the African Cup of Nations but they have their stars available as they look to better Chelsea’s result this weekend to go top of the Premier League.
“Our games against City have been interesting for one reason or other. The margin has always been small.”
Roberto Martinez
“In the second half of the season every game will be like a final for all the teams involved in the title.”
Manuel Pellegrini
