Everton U23s ran out 1-0 winners over Newcastle to win the Premier League Cup at Goodison Park and make it a double with the PL2 title.

Everton Under-23s have completed a superb double this season by adding the Premier League Cup to their Premier League 2 title on Wednesday night.
David Unsworth’s charges ran out 1-0 winners over their Newcastle United counterparts in the PLC final at Goodison Park.
Toffees captain Morgan Feeney did the honours with a bullet header midway through the second half, meeting Antony Evans’s free kick as Magpies goalkeeper Nathan Harker misjudged the flight of the ball.
Newcastle had begun the match brightly and almost took the lead during an early goalmouth scramble, but soon enough Everton went up a gear as Fraser Hornby came close to opening the scoring at the end of the first half.
Around 1,500 fans – plus Everton contingent Farhad Moshiri, Bill Kenwright, Marcel Brands and Marco Silva – were at Goodison to cheer on their team – who had won the PL2 title in April – against Newcastle, and Feeney could hardly contain his emotions in conversation with the Toffees media team at full time.
“I just went wild!” he told Everton TV as quoted by the club’s website. “The feeling was amazing. To have those fans there tonight, it makes it that bit more special. I could hear them all shouting and cheering, though I was probably making half the noise myself!”

Feeney then gave an assessment of the team this season and what he hopes from 2019-20, adding: “I pride myself in clean sheets, but it was great to pop up with the winner tonight – and next season I want to get a few more goals. It’s been a great season to win two cups, and that’s what we set out to do. We’ve got a great group here and to captain them to the trophy, I’m really proud.”
The 20-year-old, who was sidelined for six months between March and September last year after undergoing knee surgery, has been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Season award alongside Everton teammate Bassala Sambou.
Feeney is very highly rated at Everton, with Unsworth having previously described him as a “terrific” prospect and hailing his leadership skills (official website).
