Everton transfers: Jamie Redknapp warns Allardyce against making a big January window mistake

Pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he doesn’t think new Everton manager Sam Allardyce needs to splash the cash during the January transfer window.

The Toffees moved to appoint Allardyce as their new manager last week, handing him the reins over a month since sacking former boss Ronald Koeman.

Allardyce kicked off his reign with a 2-0 home win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon, with Gylfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin finding the net as Allardyce started with a clean sheet.

‘Big Sam’ must now look to analyse his squad over the the coming months, ahead of the January transfer window, when Everton are expected to be busy thanks to Farhad Moshiri’s investment.

A left back, centre back, winger and striker could be on Allardyce’s wish list, and he is no stranger to spending in the January transfer window, as seen at Crystal Palace last season.

Allardyce splashed the cash to bring in Jeffrey Schlupp, Patrick van Aanholt and Luka Milivojevic, whilst he even landed Mamadou Sakho on loan from Liverpool to help keep Palace in the Premier League.

Now though, pundit Jamie Redknapp has told the Daily Mail that he doesn’t think Allardyce needs to go on a January spending spree, as Everton’s squad is more unbalanced than lacking in quality.

Redknapp feels short-term signings in January could be a ‘big mistake’ from Allardyce, believing that Everton have talented youngsters to develop and even have winger Yannick Bolasie to return.

“When Sam Allardyce took over at Crystal Palace, I wrote in these pages that their squad was far too good to be in a relegation battle,” said Redknapp. “While Everton’s squad was left unbalanced after some muddled recruitment last summer, I similarly do not see them as relegation candidates.”

“It would be a big mistake for Allardyce to splash the cash and make quick-fix, short-term signings in January. Everton have some exciting young players and can look forward to an injection of pace when Yannick Bolasie returns from injury. Allardyce should be looking to get the best from Everton’s young stars,” he added.
