Duncan Ferguson was announced as Forest Green Rovers manager on Thursday and Sky Sports claim Ferguson is set to complete the loan signing of Everton teenager Tyler Onyango – with a deal expected to go through later today.

Linked with the vacant Everton role, Ferguson has now embarked on his first managerial role on a permanent basis. It comes after a couple of caretaker stints at Goodison Park. He joins League One side Rovers, who sit rock bottom.

Indeed, Ferguson replaces Ian Burchnall at the New Lawn. Just hours later, he is set to complete his first signing just hours after being announced as Forest Green manager. On top of that, it is an Everton player in midfielder Onyango.

The 19-year-old, who has been called up by England’s U18 side, has spent the first half on loan at Burton – playing 24 games for the League One side. Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (26/01, 3:56PM) say he is joining Ferguson at Forest Green.

Ferguson set to sign Everton teenager Onyango at Forest Green

It is not only quick movement from Ferguson, hours after he was confirmed as Forest Green boss – but it is an exciting signing, too. Onyango has already impressed in League One with Burton – a key player, for a direct relegation rival.

Indeed, Burton sit one place above 24th Forest Green, in 23rd. Gloucestershire-based side Forest Green are four points adrift from safety, but have played two more games than the three teams above them. Four teams get relegated.

Onyango is a very good signing and a player that Ferguson, having worked with Everton’s young players, will know well. Boasting experience in League One, Onyango significantly improves Rovers. A great start to life in Nailsworth.

Ferguson will take to the dugout for the first time on Saturday, when his Forest Green side take on ninth-placed Shrewsbury away from home. Onyango looks likely to be handed a debut for Ferguson’s new side come the weekend.
