Jeunes Footeux report that Everton are one of a number of clubs interested in signing Hertha Berlin sensation Dodi Lukebakio – just three years after he left Watford to join Hertha in a club-record £17million deal for the German club.

Watford signed Lukebakio, now 25, in January 2018 after impressing in Belgium. But he only played once for Watford’s senior side – going on loan to Dusseldorf for the 2018-19 season. He starred, having a hand in 19 goals in 34 games.

That form in Germany’s top tier saw Hertha splash the cash on him. He did well in his first two years at Hertha, without excelling. Scoring 16 goals and laying on 13 assists in 67 games, Wolfsburg brought him in on loan – but he was poor.

In the summer, he returned to Hertha – but something has clicked. This season, he has gone to a new level. In 16 games, he has eight goals and three assists. That form has earned him five caps for Belgium under Roberto Martinez.

Now, Everton are interested. It is unclear how much the Toffees would have to pay for the powerful winger. But he has just entered the final 18 months of his current contract, and Hertha may have to cash in if he is unwilling to sign a deal.

The Toffees need additions out wide. Dwight McNeil is yet to prove his hefty transfer fee, Andros Townsend remains on the sidelines through injury. The club do have Demarai Gray – but more is needed and Lukebakio would give them that.

If Everton can convince Hertha to sell midway through the season, with Lukebakio in such good form, it will be a bit of a surprise. But the chance to play in the Premier League under Frank Lampard will surely come as tempting for him.
