Everton’s latest target Shinji Kagawa would be excited to link back up with Wayne Rooney, if his past comments on the striker are anything to go by.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Everton are chasing Borussia Dortmund’s Kagawa, ahead of a potential summer transfer.

The Japanese international could be put up for sale, with Everton keen to offer him a new home.

And a reunion with Rooney could appeal to Kagawa, as he has previously spoken very highly of the England international.

Wayne Rooney of Everton during the Premier League match between Everton and Stoke City at Goodison Park on August 12, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Kagawa and Rooney were teammates at United for a brief period of time earlier in their careers.

And the Dortmund man said to the Independent: “It is inspiring and exciting to play alongside such world class players.

“Wayne can do everything to the highest standard. He has everything a football player would need: team spirit, hard work, switching between attack and defence.

“You don’t see such players very often. He plays for the team, plus he can score and assist.

“There is so much I can learn from him and I enjoy playing with him.”

Shinji Kagawa of Japan celebrates scoring the opening goal during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier match between Japan and Thailand at Saitama Stadium on March 28, 2017 in Saitama, Japan.

Kagawa may actually be in competition with Rooney for a place in Everton’s team, if he was to move to Goodison Park.

Rooney has been used in central midfield lately, but his better form has come as a number 10 this season.

Kagawa has made 26 appearances for Dortmund this term, scoring on six occasions and claiming seven assists.
