Everton target Seydou Doumbia endures miserable night against Barcelona; Sporting teammate would be better option

Everton have recently been linked with Sporting striker Seydou Doumbia, but his Champions League display left a lot to be desired.

Last week, The Sun suggested that Everton were interested in signing Sporting striker Seydou Doumbia as Ronald Koeman continues to look for the goalscorer who can fill the void left behind following Romelu Lukaku’s Goodison Park exit in the summer.

The Sun reported that Doumbia’s deal with the Portuguese side includes an eye-watering £55 million release clause, but based on how he has started the season, the Toffees should swiftly turn their attention away from the Ivory Coast international and instead look at his Sporting teammate.

Ronald Koeman

The 29-year-old has not started a top flight game this term, and endured a miserable night when he was handed a starting spot in the lineup that took on Barcelona on Wednesday.

The former Newcastle loanee got just 11 touches of the ball during the 44 minutes he spent on the pitch. And, in a moment that may leave Ronald Koeman feeling frustrated, he attempted to deceive the referee with a shameful dive as he ran past Gerard Pique and ultimately had to be replaced as he managed to injure himself.

With Everton struggling for goals from their strikers, Doumbia’s start to life with Sporting should leave Koeman abandoning their interest immediately.

Instead, Doumbia’s Sporting teammate is one that Everton should look at.

Bas Dost

Bas Dost has been sensational since arriving in Portugal back in 2016, scoring 38 times in 38 league games, including a staggering 34 goals in 31 appearances during his first league campaign.

The Dutchman’s form makes it baffling that no side appeared to make a greater effort to sign him during the summer, and Everton should be the ones to take advantage of that by using some of the funds they received from selling Lukaku to bring him to Goodison Park.

The 28-year-old is not exactly young, but he is still one year younger than Doumbia and has a much more impressive career record than his teammate – so if Everton are to target any striker on Sporting’s books, it simply has to be Dost.
