Atletico Madrid forward Kevin Gameiro has history against Liverpool – no wonder Everton want to sign him.
If Kevin Gameiro leaves Atletico Madrid for Everton in January, the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Goodison Park in April may be even spicier than usual.
Everton’s poor record against those in red from the other side of Stanley Park is well established. The Toffees haven’t beaten The Reds in any competition since October 2010. Yet, in Gameiro, Everton would have a striker capable of striking fear into the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s already shaky backline. After all, Liverpool are only too familiar with the Frenchman’s goalscoring exploits.
Their lead in the 2016 Europa League final, given to them by a sublime Daniel Sturridge strike, was cancelled out just 17 seconds after the interval as Sevilla stormed out of the blocks. Gameiro, largely anonymous in the first 45, displayed those all-important predatory instincts to ghost into space and tap home an excellent Mariano cross.
Long-serving skipper Coke was the unexpected hero as Sevilla sealed a third-straight Europa League triumph in Basel but it was Gameiro’s timely intervention which kick-started a rampant second-half performance and paved the way for a deserved 3-1 win.
Liverpool neutralised Everton’s powerhouse striker Romelu Lukaku in their 3-1 Premier League win at Anfield back in April but Gameiro is a different proposition altogether.
Lightning fast and blessed with the movement of a pure goalscorer, Gameiro would be a snip if Everton can get him at just £20 million with The Mirror reporting that current club Atletico Madrid may need to sell to balance the books following Diego Costa’s return.
If Gameiro could inspire another victory against Liverpool, he will have paid off that £20 million already in the eyes of Everton supporters.
