Thomas Vermaelen, who was reportedly wanted by Everton in the summer, has backed Ronald Koeman to turn the Toffees’ fortunes around.

Thomas Vermaelen has told Sky Sports that Ronald Koeman is too good a manager to not be able to turn things around at Everton after their disappointing start to the season.

The Toffees were being backed before the season had begun to push the Premier League heavyweights and potentially challenge for a top six spot after receiving plenty of plaudits for the transfer business that they did during the summer.

However, it has been a difficult time for Koeman with Everton just two points and two places above the bottom three in the top flight, having won just two of their opening seven league games.

But Vermaelen – who was linked with a move from Barcelona to Goodison Park during the previous window – has backed Koeman to get the Toffees back on track.

“He’s shown at Southampton and Ajax that he’s a great manager,” he told Sky Sports.

“He has the experience to turn it around for sure.”

Though there have been a number of other disappointing displays, it must not be forgotten that Everton have already faced Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United, so they were arguably always going to do well to go into this international break in the top-half of the table.

And with only three points separating them from ninth-place Newcastle, it may not be too long before the table starts to look a lot better for Koeman’s men if he manages to turn things around as Vermaelen expects.
