Everton were reportedly interested in signing Villarreal’s Cedric Bakambu during the summer as they prepared to lose Romelu Lukaku.

Ronald Koeman, Manager of Everton looks dejected after the Premier League match between Manchester United and Everton at Old Trafford on September 17, 2017 in Manchester, England.

With five Premier League games played, Everton find themselves in the relegation zone with just one win and three defeats coming so far for Ronald Koeman’s men.

One of the key problems the Toffees have had has been finding the back of the net, with Wayne Rooney scoring their only two league goals while bottom side Crystal Palace are the only team to have scored fewer.

So perhaps Everton fans will not be best pleased to hear that on the same day that they lost 4-0 to Manchester United – despite creating some good chances to get on the scoresheet themselves – one reported summer striker target scored twice to inspire his side to an emphatic victory.

The Sun reported back in March that Cedric Bakambu was being lined up for a summer switch to Goodison Park as they prepared to lose Romelu Lukaku.

While Lukaku did indeed leave, the Villarreal man – who The Sun reports was rated at a value of at least £25 million – did not arrive, and his most recent form may well leave Everton fans feeling disappointed that the Toffees did not do more to sign him.

Bakambu followed up his goal in the Europa League in midweek with a brace in the win over Alaves to inspire his side to a 3-0 win.

The DR Congo international received a tremendous slice of luck with his first goal as his long-range strike took a wicked deflection on its way into the back of the net.

However, the 26-year-old’s second goal was a touch of class from the Yellow Submarine as his run was met with a brilliant through ball before he showed a tremendous amount of composure to slide the ball past the Alaves goalkeeper to complete the win, and perhaps leave Everton fans wondering why the club did not appear to work harder to sign him during the summer.
